Do I wear colors for bridesmaids in a wedding dress?

I wanted a dress that is somewhat formal or ivory color champagne and leaned on my maid of honor to wear a formal evening dress used to own. It is a champagne color with gold accents. I know the traditional bridesmaid dress for the wedding colors, mine are African violets and plums, but I just thought it would be more profitable if he knew he had something else.
