Fred was only 18 and newly married when he took part in the landings. As a corporal in the 7th Battalion Black Watch, Fred embarked at Newhaven, 9 June and landed at dawn the next day.

Fred has decided his future was as a physiotherapist, and in January 1946, he joined St Dunstan's training. Many of San Dunstaners in that time were young people between 20 and training, and enjoyed their dining room, ballroom and band. Three years later, complete training, Fred joined the hospital in Burton-on-Trent. Soon he moved to Stoke, where he remained in the hospital as a physiotherapist for 35 years until his retirement.
Fred celebrated their diamond wedding in 2004 and, despite the loss of eyesight, has lived an independent life force. As a successful career as a physiotherapist, Fred is a enthusiastic gardener and fisherman. He enjoys fishing on the beach Ovingdean, near Brighton, where he visited the St Dunstan's for parties and meetings.
