Queen Mary
The construction and nomenclature
With the launch of Bremen in Germany and Europe in the service, the British did not want to be less on the run for shipbuilding. White Star Line began construction of its 60,000 tonnes in 1928 from the ocean, while on a Cunard ship 75,000 tons without proper name.
The construction of the vessel, known only as "Number 534 of the Town", started in December 1930 on the River Clyde in the John Brown & Company Shipbuilding and Engineering shipyard at Clydebank Scotland. The work was halted in December because of the great depression of 1931 and requested the Government Cunard British for a loan to fill 534. The loan was granted, with enough money to fill the Queen Mary and build a running mate Hull No. 552 would become Queen Elizabeth. A condition of the loan was that Cunard would merge with the White Star Line, which is the main rival Cunard UK time and were already forced by the crisis to cancel the construction of the Ocean. Both lines of agreement and the merger was completed in April 1934. Work on the Queen Mary resumed immediately and she was launched September 26, 1934. Completion eventually took three years and cost three million pounds in total. Much of the interior of the spacecraft was designed and built by the Bromsgrove Guild.
The ship was named after Queen Mary, wife of King George V until his release the name she was given was to be kept secret. Account Legend has it that Cunard for the name of the ship "Victoria" In the tradition of the company to give its ships names ending in "other things." Without However, when company representatives asked the King to leave the name of the largest ocean line following Britain's "Queen" told his wife, Queen Mary, would be delighted. And yes, the legend, the delegation, of course, no choice but to declare the No. 534 will be called RMS Queen Mary. The story was denied by business leaders and traditional rulers names are used only for capital ships of the Royal Navy. Some support for history has been provided by the Washington Post editor Felix Morley who had sailed as a guest of the Cunard Line in the maiden voyage of 1936, the Queen Mary. In his autobiography, 1979, memo, Morley wrote that at table with Sir Percy Bates, chairman of the Cunard Line. Bates told the story of the name of the vessel "always Printing to do in my life. "The name of Mary, the Queen also could be decided as a compromise between Cunard and White Star Line, Cunard, which recently has merged the two lines have been a tradition of using names or ending in "ic" to the White Star and "other things" Cunard.
History (1934-1939)
Queen Mary 1936
There was already a steam turbine behalf of Queen Mary Clyde, if Cunard White Star reached an agreement with the owners that the existing steam will renamed TS Queen Mary II, and in 1934 the new line was launched by Queen Mary and RMS Queen Mary. On his way through the tier, the Queen Mary has been slowed by friction chains of eighteen, he obtained the progress of the ship on the Clyde, some of which had been extended to allow the launch.
When he left for its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, May 27, 1936, was commissioned by Sir Edgar T. Britten had been named captain of Cunard White Star when the ship was under construction John Brown's shipyard. The Queen Mary had a gross tonnage (GT) 80 774 tonnes, and its rival, Normandy, which initially rose 79 280 tonnes, has changed the winter to increase their size above 83 243 GT (closed tourism fair was built on the deck to the rear, where the patio was), and therefore maintains the time the ship largest cruise. The Queen Mary sailed at high speed for much of its maiden voyage to New York until thick fog forced to reduce speed on the last day of the voyage.
The observation lounge bar. The windows were once part of the recovery enclosed promenade deck, the living has spread forward from 1967.
The design of the Queen Mary has been criticized for being too traditional, especially when the hull of the Normandie was revolutionary with a mower arc-shaped aerodynamic. Except for the cruise back, seemed to be simply an expanded version of its Cunard predecessors before World War era. Its interior decoration, while most Art Deco style, it still seemed simple and conservative compared to the French line-art. However, the Queen Mary ship has proved popular as his great rival, in terms of passengers carried.
In August 1936, Queen Mary captured The Blue Riband of Normandy, with an average speed of 30.14 knots (55.82 kph) to the west and 30.63 knots eastbound. Normandy has been renovated with a new set of propellers in 1937 and restored the honor but in 1938 the Queen Mary has taken the Blue Riband in both directions at an average speed of 30.99 knots (57.39 kph) west to the east and Record 31.69 knots which lasted until losing to the United States of the SS in 1952.

Arriving at the Port of New York, June 20, 1945, with thousands of American soldiers.
In late August 1939, the Queen Mary has been a rebound in New York to Southampton. The international situation led to her being escorted by the cruiser HMS Hood. She arrived safe, and leave for New York on 01 September. When he arrived, the Second World War had begun and was ordered to remain in port until the new order along the Normandie. In 1940, Queen Mary and Normandy have joined in New York by Queen Mary new running mate Queen Elizabeth, fresh from his desk Clydebank secret board. The three largest ships in the world at rest for a while until the Allied commanders decided that the three ships could be used as a troop transport (for Unfortunately, Normandy is destroyed by fire during the conversion of the troops). The Queen Mary has left New York to Sydney, where, along with several other liners, was became a troop transport carrying troops from Australia and New Zealand the United Kingdom. In the conversion, its hull, superstructure and funnels were painted Navy gray. Inside, the furniture and decoration booths have been removed and replaced by three levels of stacking wood (which was replaced later by passenger berths standing). Six miles from the carpet, 220 cases china, crystal and silver, tapestries and paintings were collected and stored in tanks for the duration of the war. Carpentry in the cabin, first class dining and other public places have been covered with leather. Finally, have joined the service of Queen Elizabeth, the two ships were the largest fastest and the soldiers involved in the war, often with up to 15,000 men on a journey, and often moving from one column and without escort. The fast mean it was difficult for boats to catch U.
On October 2, 1942, Queen Mary accidentally sank one its leaders, the division of light cruiser Curacao off the coast of Ireland with the loss of 338 lives. While 700 miles from Scotland during a storm, was struck suddenly beaten by a giant wave that may have reached a height of 28 meters (92 feet). An account of this crossing is in the book by Walter Ford Carter, without much sacrifice There is no greater love. Carter's father, Dr. Norval Carter, part of the 110 on board the Station Hospital at the time, wrote that at one point the Queen Mary "damned overturned near … A moment of the top cover is at its height and then swoom! Down, above and before landing. "It has been calculated after that the ship tilted by 52 degrees, and have turned if he had rolled another 3 degrees. The incident inspired Paul Gallico to write his story, The Poseidon Adventure, later it became a movie of the same name, using Queen Mary as a substitute for the SS Poseidon.
In war, the Queen Mary carried Winston Churchill across the Atlantic for meetings with representatives of Allied colleagues on several occasions, he appears on the passenger list as "Colonel Warden" and insisted that the lifeboat committed to be equipped with a 303 machine gun in order to "resist capture at all costs."
After War World
The Queen Mary in Southampton, in June 1956
From September 1946 to July 1947 Queen Mary, was again the service of passengers, adding air conditioning and improving the settings for 711 beds in first class, 707 cabin class and 577 economy class passengers. After refurbishing, the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth dominated the transatlantic passenger trade, as ships of Cunard White Star Service Week as expressed through the second half of the 1940s and the 1950s. They have proved very profitable for Cunard. But 1958 the first transatlantic flight by a jet of starting a whole new era of competition for the Cunard Queens. On some trips, especially in winter, The Queen Mary sailed into the port with most of the crew and passengers. (But she and her sister Queen Elizabeth has an average more than 1,000 passengers step in mid-1960.) By 1965 the entire Cunard fleet was leaving a trail of red ink. Hoping to continue to finance the remainder of the building Queen Elizabeth 2, Cunard mortgaged most of the fleet. Finally, under a combination of age, inefficiency, lack of public interest in a new market and the effects of deterioration after the National Marine strike Cunard announced that both the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth will be removed from service (service out of Elizabeth, a year later) and had to be sold. There were many offers, but it was Long Beach, Calif., who defeated the Japanese scrap. Thus, the Queen Mary was retired in 1967, while his running mate on the Queen Elizabeth was retired in 1968. RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 has had on the transatlantic route in 1969.
The Queen Mary in Long Beach
The Queen Mary on the north side of Long Beach Port
After his retirement in 1967, she departed Long Beach, California, where it is tied so learning as a tourist attraction. From 1983-1993, the Queen Mary was accompanied by Howard Hughes Spruce Goose, which was located in a large dome nearby (the dome is now used by Carnival Cruise Lines as a ship terminal, and previously as an area of sound).
From oil drilling began in Long Harbor Beach, part of the income had been set aside in the Fund "oil Estuaries." Some of these funds were allocated for 1958 for the future purchase of a maritime museum in Long Beach.
Conversion
When the Queen Mary was purchased by Long Beach, decided to host the flagship vessel for its preservation as a liner. It was decided allow almost all areas of the boat under the bridge C (called a bridge since 1950 to reduce confusion for passengers of all the restaurants were in "R" deck) to make way for the museum. This would increase the museum's spaces and 400,000 square meters. It took the removal of all parts of the boiler, the engine room of Both cameras ahead of the turbo, the stabilizers of the ship and water softening plant. Now the boat is empty fuel tanks then is filled with mud room that keep the center of gravity of the ship and the project at the appropriate level, taking into account these critical factors were affected by the abolition of all components and structure. Only tree aft engine room and "road" in the stern of the ship, would be saved from the cutting torch. The remaining space will be used for storage or office space. All the problems conversion has been a dispute between the land and maritime unions the conversion job. The U.S. Coast Guard had the last word Queen Mary has been seen as a building, as most of its engines were removed and emptied his machine. The ship also been painted with red water level a bit higher than its old. After conversion of the chimneys have been removed since it was the only practical way to waste materials, machinery and boilers, subsiquently was found that the chimney is organized in collaboration with over thirty layers of paint and should be replaced by new replicas.
A passage from the first-class accommodation, which is now part of the hotel on board
With all decks lower almost emptied from the bridge and R down, Diner's Club, the original tenant of the ship, was to convert the rest of the ship into a hotel. Diner's Club Queen Mary disbanded and left the ship in 1970, after its parent company, Diners Club International has been sold, and a change in management has been the mandate the center of the conversion process. Specialty of the house, a company based in Los Angeles that focuses on the topic of restaurants in operation, will take over as the tenant the following year.
During this conversion, the plan was to convert most of the booths first and second class A and B bridges in rooms hotel, and convert the main rooms and dining rooms in the reception areas. The promenade deck on the starboard promenade deck is attached to the role of a gourmet restaurant and a cafe called Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton as a theme early sailing ships of the 19th century. Comment famous and elegant bar has been refurbished, a Western-themed bar.
The Queen Mary's Bridge, now open to visitors
The small rooms, such as first-class public in the lounge, library, conference room and study music would be stripped of most connections and convert more stores, a wide range of retail presence on the boat. Two shopping centers were built More on the terrace of the various areas previously used for first-class cabins and rooms engineer.
A feature of the war the ship's cinema first class, was removed from the kitchen area dining places to walk new deck. The first class room and the House have been reconfigured and turned into space for banquets, while the second class smoking room is divided into a wedding chapel and office space. The Sun Deck, the elegant conservatory is that the grid gutted and transformed into a fast food restaurant, while a new luxury dining be created directly above the bridge over the sport in the space that is used for crew quarters. Classrooms second would extend over the ship and for banquets. On the bridge, R, first class dining room was reconfigured and is divided into two banquet rooms, the Hall Royal Windsor Hall. The dining room of the second class is divided into storage for the kitchen and the dining room crew, while the third class dining, first is used as a warehouse and crew. Also a bridge in the first class Turkish bath complex, the equivalent of a spa in 1930, would be eliminated. The second-class pool would be removed and the space originally used for offices, while the first class swimming pool would be used for hotel guests. In combination with modern safety codes and soundness of the structure of the area just below the pool is no longer in use.

In the decade, the Cousteau museum closed because of the sale of tickets low and the death of many fish that have been preserved in the museum. In November next year, the original hotel opened its 150 rooms.
