hi all just been to an asian mendhi party i noticed some rituals,
i wondered what they stood for or symbolised ?
the bride was seating on a chair,
dressed in a yellow and green outfit.
people formed a line they went up to her and in this order preformed this rituals.
1)taking money made a circle to the right around her head,
2) took some henna paste and rubbed it on her hand,
3) dipped there hands in oil and rubbed it into the brides hair
4)took a piece of fruit and fed it to the bride,
5) placed the money from the 1st stage in a basket.
im curious to no why this is done whats the meanings and religious tradtions for this?

Well basically mehndi is the most glamorous part of the 3 functions of wedding, other two being Barat and Valima. A mehndi is all about colours, singing, dances. You might’ve noticed the bride did little or no make-up, this is to show her innocence and natural beauty. You can say a mehndi is mainly for girls, but nowadays boys enjoy it too.
1) Giving money [called "sadkah"] actually means that you’re relieving the person from demons and bad luck. History: First Mughal King Babar circled 7 times around his son Humayun praying that he gets Humayun’s illness and hence, his son gets saved. We follow that making “money” the sacrifice, though most people don’t really circle it 7 times nowadays.
2) Henna paste is to clear her skin. It is said the best a bride looks is in her natural skin, with no make-up on. So they rub Henna on brides 2 months or so before her marriage day. It clears the skin and makes it smooth. Rubbing it that day is the final time to rub it, preparing for the big wedding day
3) Rubbing oil is also a rasm, probably because oil makes the hair better.
4) Eating sweet things refers to a “happy moment”. You’ll see people distributing sweets or chocolates at the time of wedding, at the birth of a baby etc…
5) That money is usually given to poor people, or usually maids working in the house. So that they also pray for the couple and by no chance, get jealouse or anything. You have to take care of the poor people so they pray for you, God loves that
Also, on mehndi, some people give money and all the young girls and boys from both the bride and groom’s side try to snatch it from them, its kinda fun, and then they compete who got the most money
